What It Is

A home for the next chapter of recovery.

Sober living homes provide safety and accountability for men and women with addiction and mental health issues to rebuild their lives. Most clients move in after completing detox, treatment, or a residential program — and many continue an outpatient program while living here.

A men's or women's sober living gives people the chance to live in a healthy, drug- and alcohol-free environment as they transition back to everyday life. It's a step-down from residential treatment — the bridge between structured care and real-world independence.

Choosing the right sober living is a fundamental part of an effective aftercare plan. Every home is different, so the level of structure, support, and amenities matters. Transitional housing builds a community of people committed to living clean, sober, and in recovery together.

The Full Picture

Inside the sober living experience.

From the research behind it to the everyday rhythm of life inside a Transcend home — here's a deeper look at what sober living actually means.

Benefits of Sober Living Houses

Evidence that sober living works.

There is ample evidence to support sober living — even in a modest apartment — as an effective way for people with addiction and stability issues to maintain long-term abstinence. One study published in The Journal of Psychoactive Drugs in 2010 showed positive longitudinal outcomes for 300 individuals across two different sober living homes.

Researchers tracked reductions in drug and alcohol use, fewer arrests within the criminal justice system, a lessening of life-threatening psychiatric symptoms, and increased employment. Two factors stood out: an engaged social network including 12-step meetings, and a community largely free of drug and alcohol use.

Sober House Structure

Trust and accountability, by design.

Sober homes provide varying levels of structure. House rules and active involvement in the planning of residents' daily lives help newly sober clients build a life free of alcohol and drugs and alleviate the suffering of addiction. With continual support, residents find the stability to keep moving forward.

Transcend offers a robust community of clients, alumni, and staff, high engagement, and a high staff-to-client ratio so residents enjoy a comfortable, safe, and cared-for life during outpatient treatment. Our experienced team provides the expertise and guidance to build a rich, meaningful life of long-term sobriety.

The Support of Community

Kindred spirits on the same road.

Living in a sober environment is a chance to cultivate new, positive relationships with people also on the journey toward recovery from drugs, alcohol, or mental health challenges. Many struggling with dependence find themselves isolated, often without meaningful friendships and with family relationships strained by addiction.

There is real power in being a member of a community of kindred spirits, all striving to improve themselves. Sober living is one of the most important ways to build a network you can rely on to sustain — and celebrate — a life of recovery. Support groups become lifelines.

Comfort & Lifestyle

A lifestyle choice, not just a program.

Different sober living homes offer varying comforts and luxuries that may help determine the transitional housing program right for you. How a home is structured, the services provided, and the amenities offered — along with the living quarters themselves — often determine the cost of sober living. It should not be confused with on-site medical care; no formal treatment happens here.

Transcend's homes in Los Angeles, New York, and Houston offer chef-prepared meals, spacious houses near beaches, shopping, and cultural hotspots, gym memberships, and transportation to recovery-related activities — with mentors and companions to keep residents accountable every step of the way.

What is Sober Living?

Freedom with a safety net.

The journey to sobriety and recovery is a difficult road. Sober living communities are transitional housing homes meant to provide a supportive environment for residents who have recently completed substance abuse treatment or rehab — helping them transition back to the real world. They're homes dedicated to keeping you sober by giving you the freedom to live outside of a facility, but under the watchful care of experienced staff.

Because Transcend's goal is to support your clean and sober recovery journey, we require random drug testing weekly for residents in our sober living homes. Sometimes residents work closely with a mental health companion or mentor to ensure they're on top of their needs and recovery goals.
