Sober living homes provide safety and accountability for men and women with addiction and mental health issues to rebuild their lives and continue their path of recovery. Typically, individuals will choose to live in a sober living home after completion of detox, treatment center, or residential program. Many clients will participate in an Outpatient Program while attending this type of environment as well. The level of support and community that sober living homes provide allows individuals to maintain the progress that they’ve achieved during the treatment process.

Sober living for men and a women’s sober living provides the opportunity to live in a healthy, safe, and alcohol and drug-free environment, usually after completing treatment at an inpatient facility. It is a step-down from residential treatment for men and women transitioning from treatment back in their everyday lives through sober living programs.

Trying to determine the appropriate next step, such as a sober living program, after inpatient treatment can be a challenge, as there are a variety of different options. The steps you take to treat substance abuse and psychological health after inpatient treatment is known as “aftercare”. Creating an effective aftercare plan is critical for the continued successful early recovery of the client, and choosing a sober living that is the right fit is a fundamental part of many of these plans.

Remember that every single sober living arrangement is unique in the degree of what they provide, and the inclusive and optional amenities included in the home. Transitional housing, such as a halfway house, provides a community of people committed to living clean, sober, and in addiction recovery together.

Benefits of Sober Living Houses

There is ample evidence to support sober living, even in a modest apartment, as an effective way for people with addiction and stability issues to maintain abstinence over the long term from drug abuse. One study published in The Journal of Psychoactive Drugs in 2010 showed positive longitudinal outcomes for 300 individuals in two different sober living homes staying drug-free. Improvements were noted among participants in the reduction in drug and alcohol use, a reduction in arrests brought about by the criminal justice system, a lessening of life-threatening psychiatric symptoms, and increased employment. Factors that contributed to these outcomes were the social network that was utilized, including more involvement in 12-step house meetings, and a community that was largely free of drug addiction and alcohol use.

Sober House Structure: Trust & Accountability

Sober homes and sober living provide varying levels of structure for their clients. This set of halfway houses' house rules and the intensity of involvement in the planning of sober living home residents’ daily lives is meant to help newly sober clients with such programs that build a life free of alcohol and drug and alleviate the suffering of addiction. It is with the continual support and structure of these halfway houses that clients can free themselves from their substance abuse tendencies, and find the stability to continue forward in recovery, all thanks to the help as well of sober living coalitions and the support and endorsement of American addiction centers.

Transcend Recovery Community offers a robust community of clients, alumni, and staff, high engagement with clients, and a high staff-to-client ratio so that residents enjoy a comfortable, safe, and cared-for life during their outpatient rehab treatment program, as approved by American Addiction Centers. Transcend’s highly experienced staff provide the expertise, guidance, and understanding for residents to build a rich and meaningful life of long-term sobriety.

The Support of a Sober Living Community

Living in a sober environment is a chance to cultivate new, positive relationships with people that are also on the journey toward recovery from drug and alcohol or mental health. Many battling dependence on drugs and alcohol find themselves isolated and alone, often without many meaningful friendships, while relationships with family and significant others are strained from the stress of drug and alcohol addiction.

There is real power in being a member of a community of kindred spirits, all striving to improve themselves. Sober living is one important way to build a network of people you can rely on to sustain, and celebrate, a life of recovery. Other residents learn this as they stay for a certain period until they are fit enough to integrate themselves into the outside world independently.

Support groups are your lifelines if you want to stay sober, and it's much better since you feel loved and appreciated by people who, like you, underwent alcohol abuse or drug addiction. That way, you feel more empowered to continue with your trauma therapy or alcohol recovery process without feeling unsatisfied or neglected.

Comfort: A Lifestyle Choice

Different sober living offers varying comforts and luxuries that may help you determine the transitional housing program that is right for you. As they are structured differently, services provided, and the amenities offered at a particular home, along with the living quarters themselves, are often what determine the sober living cost, such as when you pay rent. It should not be confused with on-site medical care or a treatment provider, as you don't get any formal treatment here.

Transcend’s recovery community offers sobering living homes partnering with treatment centers, and treatment facilities in Los Angeles, CaliforniaNew York, New York, and Houston, Texas with such amenities as healthy, chef-prepared meals, spacious houses near beaches, shopping, and cultural hotspots, membership to a local gym, transportation to and from recovery-related activities.

It's the perfect residents' stay for those who continuously receive treatment for outpatient rehab or still undergoing separate early stages of treatment options, as there are mentors and companions to help them remain accountable for their actions every single time. These places make for a compelling choice as they are supported by American addiction centers for post-treatment. However, they are not best for overnight guests.

What is Sober Living?

The journey to sobriety and recovery is a difficult road to travel. This is where sober living communities come in. Transitional housing homes are meant to provide a supportive environment to help sober living residents who recently completed substance abuse treatment or rehab transition to the real world and off drugs and alcohol. They’re homes dedicated to keeping you sober by giving you the freedom to live outside of a facility but under the watchful care of staff with experience. Clients living here are transported to and from recovery-related activities, such as meetings or an intensive outpatient program.

There are even sober colleges for students who underwent addiction recovery from other drugs or alcohol to help them get back to their educational aspirations.

Since Transcend’s goal is to help you with your clean and sober recovery journey, we provide and require residents random drug testing weekly in our sober living home. This active participation among clients helps them to be accountable and on track for their drug treatment and is approved by the American addiction centers or the national association for drug addiction and alcohol abuse recovery. It's also the best way to work on outpatient program general acceptance, one where the client still feels dignity and respect post-treatment.

This goes hand in hand especially when recovering individuals need interventions to ensure that their recovery is not short-lived.

What’s a Typical Day like in a Sober Living House?

The daily life in sober living environments is balanced between recovery services offered for an addiction treatment program and a sober living program, personal activities, and staying clean and sober while in a safe environment. Depending on your recovery plan, programs follow scheduled visits to your rehab facility for scheduled sessions. However, you may partake in other activities structured by the sober living house. Clients can also expect to be randomly drug tested around twice per week. Each of these recovery-focused activities is meant to hold you accountable and keep you on track.

Finally, living in the best sober living homes gives you the chance to integrate back into the outside world. Explore the local area and take in the city’s attractions, and ultimately live an addiction-free and normal life. The balance of structured addiction recovery and personal freedom is an excellent way to transition to independence, all thanks to a sober living arrangement.

Sometimes, individuals work closely with a mental health companion or a mental health mentor to ensure that they are on top of their needs and recovery goals.
