Los Angeles is a massive city with hundreds of neighborhoods, millions of people, and uncountable experiences. There’s so much to do and so much to see that it’s just impossible to see it all – shops, festivals, occasions and events come and go. But if you stick around, you will have a great sober life full of amazing experiences, and your fair share of surprises.
Best of all? It’s all possible without a single drop of booze. You don’t need drugs or alcohol to have a good time in LA – to the contrary, if you’re sober, you’re much more likely to enjoy the vast majority of these activities. If it’s the sober life for you, then don’t worry – there’s plenty to do and have fun with in Los Angeles, both alone and with friends.
Join a Class
When people think of “fun”, their first thought definitely isn’t class. But we’re not talking about going back to school or getting dragged along to a workshop you couldn’t care less about because of an overly enthusiastic friend.
No, the point here it to try something you haven’t tried before, but have always been interested in. It could be anything, from a philosophy book club, to a cooking class, a martial arts program, or a class on oil painting and wood working. Going to one of these drunk might have been an option in the past, but now that you’re sober, you get to actually remember what you learned – and grow from the experience.
Whatever it is, the only thing that matters is that it piques your interest. And who knows what interesting characters you might meet along the way?
Go for a Swim
Los Angeles is a coastal city with a river, several world-class beaches, and countless indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Swimming is something you can do every day of the week, any month of the year – but seeing as it’s summer, there’s no better time to take advantage of LA’s prime beach destinations than right now.
Pack your bag, prep some food, pull out that sun lotion and enjoy a day by the beach. It’s not just a great way to unwind, or get some exercise, but the combination of the sea breeze with a healthy dose of vitamin D from the sun can drastically help improve your mood. So, if you’re feeling down, go for a swim!
Go for a Hike
Not everyone is a beach person. Other people prefer to get further away from the sea level – specifically vertically. Los Angeles and the greater LA area is dotted with several prime hiking destinations, including:
- Bronson Canyon
- Cahuenga Peak
- Grotto Trail
- Griffith Park
- Los Liones Canyon
- Trail Canyon Falls
- And much more.
Just like swimming, being out and about among nature and working your way up a trail with sweat and grit can drastically improve your mood, calm your mind, and take your brain off other worries to help you live a sober life.
Head to a Spa
If hiking, swimming, pounding a bag or hitting the iron aren’t fun ways to relieve stress in your opinion, then don’t fret – there’s plenty of ways to get rid of stress in a healthy fashion without exercise. You’ll still work up a sweat, though.
Not only is Los Angeles renown for beaches, parks and trails, but it’s got a lot of spas, too. Regardless of what type of spa you best prefer, there’s bound to be one just nearby that’s perfect for you.
Murder Mystery and Escape Rooms
These immersive role-playing experiences are tailored to provide a real-life adventure game, meant for grown ups who feel that there’s no such thing as being too old for a little fun and a little imagination. Murder mystery dinners and escape rooms are growing in popularity, and in scope and complexity. Can you figure out whodunit?
Head to Chinatown Summer Nights
It’s June, which just happens to be the perfect time to go check out this limited event currently ongoing in Chinatown. The Chinatown Summer Nights is an all-ages food and summer party open to the public every fourth Saturday from June to August. This year, that’s June 30th, July 28th, and August 25th, from 5:00 PM to midnight.
Chinatown Summer Nights features classic LA Chinatown cuisine, live bands, dancing, gourmet food trucks, culture workshops, massive video projections, flea markets and more.
Check out Little Tokyo/India/Italy/Mexico/Armenia/Korea
LA is more than just a city, it’s a collection of cultures from all over the world. By virtue of being a coastal metropolis, LA has been a meeting point for families from all over the world for decades, and little ethnic communities have formed all over the city, giving you plenty of places to explore, travel, and visit different cultures.
A Sober Life is a Part of The Journey
A sober life, if nothing else, is a chance to live life to the fullest. To most, that adage is meaningless or overly cliché. But there is truth to it. Sobriety means not being intoxicated – by committing to living a sober life, you’re also going to be seeing life much more clearly. Cutting addiction out of your life gives you more time and money to do the things you want to do. And through family, friends, a stable job opportunity and a few true passions, you can live a fulfilling and amazing sober life without a single drop of booze.
But the journey most definitely doesn’t happen overnight. A big part of getting to that point of contentment where you overcome your past is by trying new things out. Passion is important – knowing what really makes you happy and gets you out of bed in the morning can give you direction and purpose and keep your mind off the cravings and the temptations. This is especially important in early recovery, when keeping your mind off the addiction feels impossible.
If you live in LA, you have the privilege of living in one of the greatest cities in the world. And while it has its problems, there’s no shortage of things to do, places to see, and experiences to have, regardless of your budget or your interests. Live your life sober in Los Angeles!
