A Halfway House that’s Holistic & Healthy |

Some form of rehabilitative services is necessary when you’re trying to get sober. It can be a challenging road to recovery if attempted on one’s own. Because of the many psychological and emotional challenges, having a community of like-minded sober-focused people around you can facilitate the journey towards healthy and sober living.

Depending on the level of support you need, a halfway house could be the perfect fit for you. Typically, it is a live-in facility where adults participate in a variety of rehabilitative services. It is an extension of care for those recovering from addiction and who may have already participated in a more intensive form of rehabilitative treatment. Patients live at halfway houses, as they would in a traditional rehab center, and they have significantly more freedom to be able to attend work, school, or family events.

Although traditional halfway houses do not include medical or clinical treatment, as would most residential treatment centers, in recent years, they are beginning to include many holistic services such as yoga, meditation, and mindfulness.

According to The Free Dictionary, holistic care is: “a system of comprehensive or total patient care that considers the physical, emotional, social, economic, and spiritual needs of the person; his or her response to illness; and the effect of the illness on the ability to meet self-care needs.” Essentially, holistic care takes into about the whole person. It not only considers the physiological and physical aspects of the addiction, but also the emotional, psychological, and spiritual facets to the addiction.

Halfway houses that are holistic and that recognize the need to address the whole person might offer holistic practices such as yoga and meditation. Yoga is a practice, which invites an integrated experience of body and mind. Its effects can be experienced immediately as well as over time. Meditation is also a very calming practice that can also produce healing experiences. Although meditation might be difficult at first, the challenge at the beginning is worth the rewards.

Other holistic practices might include spiritual self-expression, inspirational reading, exercise, nutrition counseling, and development of life skills. The latter might be courses on money management, employment searching, and improved coping skills. Furthermore, they might have a culinary artist on board who prepares healthy and organic meals and who is able to make special dietary considerations for their patients.

A recent study done at a teen recovery center found that integrating spiritual practices could help teens in their recovery. Experts at The University of Akron, Case Western Reserve University, and Baylor University performed the study, while the research itself took place at a facility called New Directions in Northeast Ohio. The results indicated that changes in spiritual experiences were correlated to better treatment outcomes. Specifically, the positive treatment outcomes included lower levels of drug occurrence, less self-centeredness, and higher frequency of positive social behavior.

The results of the study are not all that surprising and it’s easy to apply those same changes of spiritual experience to adults. A rehabilitative environment that includes both spiritual and traditional experiences of recovery are meant to facilitate in adults deeper insight into the choices they are making for their life and encourage connection with a core self. Of course, holistic activities also help to promote physical well being, a healthy self-image, productive coping mechanisms, and psychological health. When these are combined with the right rehabilitative environment for sober living, they can create lasting change.
